Shoulder pads are a type of fabric-covered padding used in men's and women's clothing to give the wearer the illusion of having broader, and less sloping shoulders.Their use is particularly associated with clothing of the early 1940s and the 1980s.
Shoulder pads originally became popular for women in the 1930s when fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli included them in her designs of 1931, and the following year Joan Crawford wore them in the film "Letty Lynton". Shoulder pads made their next appearance in women's clothing in the early 1970s, through the influence of British fashion designer Barbara Hulanicki and her label Biba. Biba produced designs influenced by the styles of the 1930s and 1940s, and so a soft version of the shoulder pad was revived. These styles did not, however, reach mainstream acceptance, and so the popularity was relatively short lived.
During the early 1980s there was a resurgence of interest in the ladies' evening wear styles of the early 1940s.As the decade wore on, shoulder pads became the defining fashion statement of the era. The shoulder pad fashion carried over from the late 1980s with some popularity in the early 1990s, but tastes were changing. Some designers continued to produce ranges featuring shoulder pads into the mid-1990s, but the marketplace had spoken—the styles now looked out of date and were shunned by the young and fashion-conscious.

Growing up i remember how old i always felt everytime mi Ma made me wear a dress with SP's in them...arrrggghhh! i felt so unfashionable.

Today a jacket with high shoulders is an absolute must-have for this fall. This fall they are the actual trend to serve for a trendy and a powerful woman of today. That trendy item became actual, thanks to Christophe Decarnin, the Creative Manager to the French House of Balmain. It was Decarnin who reincarnated such a recognizable element of the '80s when he launched collections for Spring-Summer 2009 with a line of military-styled jackets and dresses with shoulder pads....
The modern shoulder pads are very different from the discarded ‘80s versions. The modern shoulder pad is more narrow and sloping, resembling a shoulders of a elegant and thin woman. Shoulder pads have also trickled down into celebrities closets, fashionistas everywhere have applauded them. Shoulder pads have been seen on celebrities such as Beyonce, Victoria Beckam, Kim Khadasian, Rihanna, American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert and of course Miss Gaga herself.

Lady Gaga showed up at the launch of her new CD dressed as the Hunchback of Notra Dame. Oh wait, those are just shoulder pads....This must have been what i saw when i screamed NO MA NO SHOULDER PADS....wanna wear shoulder pads pls dnt wear this..
HOW TO WEAR SHOULDER PADS: as a jacket on a pair of skinny jeans with a tank-top or turtle neck or t-shirt underneath: as a pencil dress short,knee-length or long: as a top on a pair of skinny jeans or mini-skirt.Whatever way you rock this please dont wear SP's on big clothing:loose jeans, boyfriend jeans, flowing skirts or dresses are a no-no..the SP is overstating the outfit already.
With the resurrection of shoulder pads, skinny jeans, leggings, acid wash jeans, and bondage dresses, the ‘80s are definitely back. xoxo
